Wireless Headset Review

by Freddy McCandless

As little as a decade ago, wireless headsets could cost quite a bit of money but only deliver relatively poor sound quality and audio pickup range compared to what today's models are capable of. In fact, the cost could make your head spin because it was so astronomical.

Nowadays, there are a myriad of good-quality wireless headsets out there that won't break the bank when one goes to purchase them. Additionally, their sound quality has never been better and their prices have never been more attractive. If really great sound quality is of utmost importance, expect to spend the requisite amount of money to get it.

There are a couple of different methods that wireless headsets use to receive audio output. Normally, the better headsets are based off of radio frequency systems. In these, a transmitter from the audio output unit, whether it's a television or stereo, sends radio waves which are picked up by the wireless headset receiver.

As far as pros and cons go, radio frequency wireless headsets have one con; they sometimes are noted for really burning through standard alkaline batteries pretty quickly. Because of this, it might be a good idea to spend a few bucks for a set of nickel cadmium rechargeable batteries rather than constantly having to replace standard batteries. It's not really a big deal, but some people don't relish stocking up on batteries.

A type of headset unit that's wireless uses an infrared (IR) beam sent from the audio output source to the wireless headsets. The downside to this sort of system -- if it's really a downside at all for most people -- is that headsets of this type normally use line of sight. This means that if a person steps out of the beam's path far enough to headsets won't pick up the audio output.

Ultimately, it's more personal preference that drives selection in wireless headsets rather than anything else. Keep in mind that radio frequency type headsets are just a bit bulkier and weigh just a bit more than standard infrared type headsets, though such a difference is minute and hardly ever will be noticed by all but the most hard-core audio nut. Remember; costlier headsets tend to deliver better sound quality.

At any rate, it's just a matter of going onto the Internet and looking up wireless units of this sort and then deciding what kind of brand or model will work best for each circumstance. There are a lot of great wireless headsets out there and it can be a lot of fun to test them out. Remember, though, there are also some very poor headsets, so let the buyer beware.
